CybAlert Social Media Password Improvement Hint 2
Under no circumstance should you ever update a password or login from a link in an email.
Spearphishing... or phishing... is a method of sending you an email from what appears to be your community or bank.
The email may include the community or bank logo... and the link may even look like it's the community or bank website... but behind the HTML code the
link actually diverts you to the bad guys website.
In most cases, the link initiates a malware attack on your computer.
The malware attack will deposit various forms of viruses on your computer. The primary effort is to either source your cookies, or your authentication tokens, or stored email that may contain email addresses, userid, and passwords.
The bottom line: A reputable site... with any comprehension of good or best practices in security and authentication, will not send you an email with a link to update your userID or password.
If you are wondering if this all new ? Well you do not need to feel bad. As long as there has been authentication there have been bad guys trying to dupe web users in giving up their userID and password.
Our suggestion is to make it difficult for the bad guys.
